Marguerite Route - Skælskør and Hans Christian Andersen Ride

Ride Duration: 1 Day or More

Location (nearest city or town): Skælskør, Denmark

Ride Type : Touring

Introduction: The Brown-white-yellow Marguerite signs shown at the right mark the Marguerite Route. The Marguerite Route through Skælskør on Sealand is said to be one of the most beautiful bike of the routes in Denmark.

The Marguerite Route leading through Skælskør is one of the most beautiful bike routes in Denmark. The marked route takes you through the landscape to the manors and castles which Hans Christian Andersen was so fond of. It takes its starting point at the Manor of Espe of which the main building dates back to 1848. From the grounds you have an excellent view of the newly built Great Belt Bridge and Funen.

The route continues to the town of Skælskør via Gammeltorv with the town hall and the church on to the harbour (the Tourist Office) and onwards past Harboes Bryggeri - an industrial building from 1883 with embellished masonry. The brewery and the new visitor's center (opened in 1996) are open to visitors by advance arrangement.

HerreborgHerreborgen Borreby is the next stop on the route. A beautiful avenue leads alongside the fjord directly to the manor house which is one of Denmark's oldest and best preserved Renaissance buildings erected in 1556. It was a fortified manor house on double castle mounds - hence the designation "herreborg" (fortified manor house). The park has been constructed in the French geometrical style in 1750, and in the same year a chapel was built in the west wing of the castle. The Castenschiold family has owned and lived at Borreby since 1783.
Borreby Gallery is open every weekend in the summer with various exhibitions of crafts of high quality. There is free admission to the gallery, the antique exhibition, the castle yard and the park from which you can enjoy the sight of the historic buildings.

Borreby Mose (moor) is a bird sanctuary and breeding ground for the greylas, godwit, ruff, avocet, shoveler and the grey-necked grebe. It is a resting and feeding place for duck birds.

You are also recommended to visit Glænø. Here the landscape is dominated by hills and steep cliffs. From Glænø you can enjoy the view of Ormø which is the home of one of the largest colonies of cormorants in Europe.

In The Church of Ørslev located in the village of Ørslev there is a beautiful and well-known fresco painting from 1350. The fresco illustrates the merry chain dances of the Middle Ages.

Holsteinborg Castle can be reached via one of the longest chestnut avenues in Denmark (3 km). The Trolle family built the castle in the 17th century naming it Trolholm. The farm is almost completely surrounded by moats, and the main building consists of four undetatched wings. The castle has been owned by the Holstein family since 1707.

The church was built in 1728 by Chancellor Ulrich Adolph Holstein. Holsteinborg Slot was the place most frequently visited by Hans Christian Andersen. The rooms of Andersen and the church are open to visitors by advance arrangement.

The first Christmas tree in Denmark was lit in the rooms of Holsteinborg Castle. The park is built in baroque style in the 18th century and commands a view of Holsteinborg Cove where you can see swans and diving ducks. The white tailed and the golden eagle pay regular visits here every winter. The island of Ormø situated in the cove is the home of the largest cormorant colony in Denmark. The park is open to visitors.

Bisserup is a beautifully situated village with around 500 inhabitants. You will see many half-timbered houses with thatched roofs alongside Holsteinborg Cove and the idyllic harbour. Near Bisserup there is a large summer house area, a camping site and nice beaches. Lods-Kroen (inn) near the harbour is well worth a visit.

From Bisserup the Marguerite routes continues towards Fuglebjerg.

Kanehøj. 3,5 km from Skælskør on the road to Sorø is a burial mound 40 meters in diameter. It presumably dates back to the Bronze Age. It was previously used as a place of execution. In 1825 Hans Christian Andersen witnessed one of the last executions in Denmark of a 17 year old girl, her lover and the lover's servant. The execution which at the time was viewed as a popular entertainment made a great impression on Andersen. He later mentioned the execution in his autobiography.

Kanehøj Mill is one of the last shingle mills in Denmark. The mill was originally constructed as a postmill around 1680. The present Dutch windmill was erected around 1880. Open to visitors.

Boeslunde is located between Skælskør and Korsør. The highly elevated parish church is one of the most beautiful churches in Denmark and has previously been used as a navigation mark.

Borgbjerg Banke opposite the church is known for several interesting finds from the Bronze Age. Today there is an interesting open-air stage on the hill.  Boeslunde has a campsite with cabins.
